How Does Satellite Radio Work :

You probably have been hearing a lot about satellite radio these days. It's all over the media since famous personalities like Howard Stern, Martha Stewart, Jimmy Buffet and others have decided to join the switch from public to paid radio instead. But a lot of folks still don't understand how satellite radio works even though they have heard so much about it.

The first thing to understand is that satellite radio is not free. It is not like the FM and AM bands of your home or car radio. Those are public air waves and are government regulated, so they have to make their profits by selling advertising time on the radio to businesses that want to get their products out to the people who tend to listen to that particular channel. It's very much like public TV advertising in that respect, but with only the sound.

Satellite radio howevr is more like cable TV. You have to pay for the service. But you get lots of benefits for the monthly payment. One is that you will not get advertising breaking in and interrupting the flow of the program or music that you are listening to. Since the profits come from monthly subscriptions there are no commercials selling other products. For many people, that is a tremendous benefit right there.

But another great advantage that satellite radio has over public radio stations is that you can never lose the channel you want to listen to by going out of range. The reason for that is that the signal is being sent by a system of satellites that are orbiting high above the earth and therefore there are no obstructions to degrade or interfere with the radio signal. So you can pretty much drive anywhere you like and your satellite radio signal will still be clear with no distortion.

If you get tired of listening to a particular channel, don't worry, because you have over 100 more channels to select including both talk and music of almost any kind. You just can't run out of good stuff to listen to on satellite radio and it is always there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter where you go.

Hopefully, you can see why so many people are rushing to satellite radio and taking advantage of this new boon in technology.
